The Weight and Wonder of Inherited Stories

Leadership is never carried alone. Every decision, every word, and every presence in the room is shaped not only by the leader’s own choices but also by the stories they inherit. These are the histories of families, communities, cultures, and organizations that came before. Some stories strengthen us, offering roots of resilience and wisdom. Others weigh us down, binding us to wounds that were never ours to begin with.

The challenge of leadership is discernment: to carry the wisdom of the past while releasing the weight of its pain. To recognize what serves the journey forward and what was never meant to be carried forever.

How to Recognize the Weight of Inherited Stories

  • Echoes of Resilience: Traditions, lessons, and practices that anchor you in values and vision, like deep roots that steady in shifting ground.

  • Unspoken Wounds: Silences, fears, or habits passed down from those who carried their own burdens.

  • Expectations That Do Not Belong to You: Standards or roles upheld without questioning whether they align with your true purpose.

How to Practice Discernment in What You Carry

  • Name the Story: Bring inherited narratives into the open. Ask: Whose story is this, and why am I still carrying it?

  • Keep What Strengthens: Hold onto the roots of resilience, wisdom, and sacrifice that align with your values.

  • Release What Diminishes: Honor the past without repeating its pain. Not every root must bind you.

  • Transform Through Choice: Once named, some stories can become wings — lifting you toward new ways of leading, reshaped by purpose and vision.

A Personal Reflection

When I lost my position through federal budget cuts, I felt the weight of my own story colliding with inherited ones. In my family and community, resilience had always been sacred, the ability to keep going, no matter the burden. But I also realized I was carrying a story of silence: the belief that pain should be endured quietly, never named, never questioned.

The resilience rooted me. The silence bound me. Naming that distinction allowed me to carry forward courage while setting down the fear that voicelessness was the only way to survive.

Leadership asks us to do this work, not only for ourselves, but for those who will inherit the stories we leave behind.

Beware

Beware of carrying stories that no longer serve. Some roots nourish; others entangle. Some wings lift; others tether. The wisest leaders know the difference; they choose what grounds with strength and what allows them, and those who follow, to rise.
