One Mirror, Many Truths
What felt like falling short was experienced differently.
One Mirror, Many Truths
There are moments when the past, present, and future share the same mirror, not to distort, but to clarify.
For many years, I carried responsibility for the professional growth of others.
It is a significant responsibility, which I have always taken seriously, even when I was unsure whether I was making a positive impact.
Recently, I received two unsolicited texts from former employees.
One wrote (edited slightly for clarity):
“One of the many things I liked about you, even when we were working together, was that you never judged any of us.
You always went above and beyond.
I never really saw you as just a boss.
You cared, and you also showed that you were human. You made mistakes.”
The second wrote:
“I am truly grateful for you.
I have shared multiple stories about you recently, all good things.
You inspire people you don’t even know.”
Both messages arrived during a period when I was navigating my own self-doubt.
I felt myself pause, unsure how to hold their words.
Because the truth I carried was more shadowed.
More complicated.
I often questioned whether I was showing up well.
Whether my guidance landed.
Whether my attempts at fairness were enough.
Whether my own uncertainty was visible in ways I did not intend.
I spent much of that time trying to remain steady, especially when I felt unsure of my effectiveness.
Trying to coach, to support, to offer opportunities, while quietly questioning if any of it mattered.
I worried that my internal struggle was louder than my intentions.
And yet, both described an experience shaped by something different.
They felt seen.
They felt supported.
They felt room to grow.
I found myself considering a version of myself I had never allowed myself to fully imagine.
A version in quiet conflict with my internal narrative.
It made me wonder how often we misjudge our own impact.
How often we assume our doubts overshadow our efforts.
How often we forget that people remember our humanity more than our certainty.
I thought I had fallen short.
They felt uplifted.
Two truths, living side by side, waiting for the day they would finally meet.
Recently, they did.
Something in me shifted.
The past returned carrying a softer truth than the one I had held for myself.
Different versions of me, finally meeting the same mirror.
